During this bi-monthly book club, we'll discuss a book, enjoy some snacks, and have fun with a themed craft. This book club is best suited for patrons ages 8-12. Registration is required for all attendees who would like an honor copy of the book. Register after December 1 and drop by Madelyn Helling Library to pick up a copy of the book--no check out required! Copies are limited to the first 10 registrants.
You are welcome to join the fun without registering! Check out a copy of the book from the library or bring your own!
January read: Save Me a Seat by Sarah Weeks & Gita Varadarajan.
"[Grownups] need to know that in Save Me a Seat by Gita Varadarajan and Sarah Weeks, Ravi and Joe are fifth-graders who find school to be a tough place because of how people treat them. Ravi's bullied for being an immigrant, while Joe's targeted because his Auditory Processing Disorder (APD) means he sometimes struggles in class, and because his mother works in the school cafeteria. Ravi is told by his teacher that he does not speak English well enough despite English being his first language and is called racist nicknames by a fellow student. There's also a minor character who says that immigrants don't belong in the United States. Teachers at school and family members treat Ravi and Joe with empathy and kindness. Some of the adults in their lives learn to listen more closely to them after the boys stand up for themselves."
